Cholankanda Youth Training Centre Rebrands as Campus and Expands NVQ Programmes

Cholankanda Youth Training Centre (CYTC) has officially rebranded as Cholankanda Youth Training Campus, marking a significant milestone in its journey toward academic excellence. This transformation comes alongside new initiatives to upgrade its programmes to NVQ Levels 4 and 5, with a vision of offering diploma and other value-added courses in the near future.

The new brand name was ceremonially declared open at the campus entrance by Fr. Sujeewa, the Provincial, together with Ms. Elaine, Founder of the Liv Foundation, a valued mission partner. The Campus community expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Provincial and the Jesuits for their continuous support in fostering the growth of CYTC. Appreciation was also extended to the Liv Foundation for its steadfast commitment to uplifting underprivileged youth through education and skills development.

A Certificate Distribution Ceremony was held with the esteemed presence of Frs. Tyrone and Christian, along with 15 representatives from the Liv Foundation. Certificates were awarded to 41 ICT Technicians, 11 Automobile Mechanics, and 6 Electricians in recognition of their successful completion of training programmes. On this occasion, Mr. Hugo, Board Member of the Liv Foundation, generously donated a Smart Board to enhance the institute’s teaching and learning facilities.

The Campus also successfully hosted the “Minds Well Camp,” a psychological and spiritual counselling programme for children and parents affected by landslides caused by Cyclone Ditwah. Around 300 participants from Summerset, Berawila, Rakshawa, and Galamuduna attended the sessions. Counselling was conducted by Rev. Fr. Arul Raj, CMF, and the professional team from CLASIKA, with the support of the Good Shepherd Sisters and the Sisters of Our Lady of the Eucharist. While children engaged in therapeutic activities, games, and creative sessions, parents were provided a safe and supportive environment to share their experiences. As part of the programme, the Liv Foundation distributed school stationery packs to the children, and Rt. Rev. Dr. Valence Mendis, Bishop of Kandy, provided dry ration packs to each affected family. The organizers conveyed sincere appreciation to all individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of this meaningful initiative.

Adding to its innovative achievements, the Electrical students of Cholankanda Youth Training Campus successfully designed and developed a centralized, electrically controlled model train project under the guidance and encouragement of Fr. Anton, a long-time train enthusiast. With his technical insight and passion for railway systems, Fr. Anton supported the students in creating a fully functional train setup powered by an organized electrical supply system.

The project showcased the students’ practical skills, creativity, and teamwork, while providing valuable hands-on experience in electrical wiring and control systems. This initiative further reflects the Campus’ commitment to experiential learning and innovative technical education.

In keeping with its commitment to quality improvement, CYTC instructors visited VTA centres to update themselves on the latest curriculum developments. Furthermore, Fr. Director, together with Mrs. Wil Bekkering of the Liv Foundation, visited the Hatton Loyola Campus to explore future collaboration opportunities.

Demonstrating a spirit of solidarity and service, two Claretian theologians spent two months with the Jesuit community, offering pastoral support to families in five cyclone-affected villages.

Additionally, the Campus administration conducted its bi-annual evaluation across all four departments to ensure continued academic and institutional excellence. Fr. George continues to play an active and vital role on campus, dedicating his time to student counselling, guidance, and disciplinary matters. Through his regular engagement with students, he provides personal support, moral direction, and encouragement to help them overcome academic and personal challenges. His commitment ensures a disciplined, supportive, and value-based learning environment within the Campus community.

Through these initiatives, Cholankanda Youth Training Campus reaffirms its commitment to empowering youth, strengthening communities, and expanding opportunities for holistic development. AB IMO AD ASTRA!
